Thank you to everyone who supported our school fair on Thursday and to all of the volunteers and staff who made this possible. Special thanks to the local coastguard, fire service and Sue from The country Trust who gave up their time to join us. We are delighted to announce that with your support we raised ÂŁ1,325.12. This week our school football team played their last match of the season. This is the first year we have had our own school team represented in the East Northumberland U11 7-a-side football league and the children all played really well. We are very proud of them all! Thank you to all the teachers and parents for their support after school at the matches too!

Wear your scarf to school day

12th February 2023Fran Davison

The children at James Knott took part in Coram Life Education‘s ‘Wear your Scarf to School Day’ to support Children’s Mental Health Week which was the 6th to the 12th Feb.

During the day we thought about whether our choice of scarf said something special about us and the ways in which different scarves could reflect the SCARF values we use to support our Personal, Social and Health education (PSHE) teaching. For example:

SAFETY – some scarves will be warm and comforting, helping to keep someone snug and safe in very cold weather!

CARING – some scarves might have been a present from a special person; they’ll help make someone feel cared for. Wearing a scarf as part of religious faith can also help someone to feel cared for.

ACHIEVEMENT – some scarves might be part of a club, perhaps a sports team. These are waved when a club achieves (e.g. when a football team scores a goal!) They also show when someone belongs to something.

RESILIENCE – a football team’s scarf can also help someone to remember that they can still support a team even if it’s not doing well; they can show resilience when bouncing back from defeat or disappointment.

FRIENDSHIP – maybe some scarves were a gift from a friend and this makes them extra special.

It was a fantastic day of reflection for all the children. Thank you all.

Proposed a change to the school Admissions Policy for 2024-25 and onwards.

10th October 2022Roger Pearson
As the Admissions Authority, NCEA Trust are proposing a change to the school Admissions Policy for 2024-25 and onwards.  This is our formal notification of a consultation period from 10th October 2022 until 29th November 2022.
We propose to change the oversubscription criteria in the following way:
Remove criteria 5 “Children who already have a sibling at the school and are living outside the catchment area” and amend criteria 2 “Children who already have a sibling at the school and are living within the catchment area” to simply “children who already have a sibling at the school”.
This change would mean that sibling families are ensured a place at the same school. This is important for attendance, punctuality and transportation to one school destination by the most efficient method.
Please click here to see the proposed change details of the full policy.

Hula-hooping fun for Years 4 and 5

13th May 2022Leanne Tonks

Year 4 and Year 5 pupils from James Knott Primary took part in a fantastic opportunity with HoopStarz at Blyth Sports Centre last week. The children were taught how to hula-hoop, they were then gradually given harder challenges to complete while hula hooping such as hopping, jumping, 360 turns and sweeping.

Pupils also took part in group challenges using hoops to create a small nest/home. They then had to weave in and out without breaking their construction.

The children had a fantastic time and are looking forward to showing off these new techniques and tricks back at school and at home.

See the children in action!

Fairtrade award success for James Knott Eco Warriors

31st March 2022Leanne Tonks

A primary school in South East Northumberland has taken its first steps towards becoming a certified ‘Eco School’ after receiving the FairAware Award from the Fairtrade Foundation.

James Knott C of E Primary School in Ashington, which operates as part of Northumberland Church of England Academy Trust, achieved the award in recognition of the efforts its pupils and staff have made to become more environmentally aware and conscious of the positive impact of using Fairtrade products.

Driven by the school’s ‘Eco Warriors’ group, pupils took part in a special assembly during the national ‘Fairtrade Fortnight’ event held earlier this month to introduce the topic of Fairtrade – what it is and why schools should support it. Staff and pupils then participated in a series of audits to assess what Fairtrade products were already in use within the school, how Fairtrade was included in the teaching curriculum and what level of understanding the children had about Fairtrade.

The data was then submitted to the Fairtrade Foundation for analysis which resulted in the school receiving its FairAware Award.

“We’re absolutely delighted to have achieved the FairAware Award. The Award is the culmination of a huge amount of work to help us take the first positive step towards becoming a fully-fledged Eco School,” said Claire Donnelly, Class Teacher at James Knott C of E Primary School.

“The enthusiasm shown by our staff and pupils throughout the project has been incredible. Our Eco Warriors – a group of pupils from Years 5 and 6 have been fundamental to the success of the project having given up their break times and even stayed late after school to help compile the audit results and complete the online application forms.

“Looking to the future, we hope to achieve our second Fairtrade Foundation accredited award – the FairActive Award, by Christmas 2022 and to grow our eco community in school even further by electing a Fairtrade ambassador for each form class. The ambassadors will be responsible for suggesting ideas how we can improve our Fairtrade status, such as switching to Fairtrade tea and coffee in the staff room and stocking Fairtrade produce as part of our annual Market Stall day.”

Alan Hardie, CEO at Northumberland Church of England Academy Trust, added:

“At NCEAT, we are passionate about encouraging our pupils to become conscientious global citizens, tuned in to the wider impact that they can have on the world around them through small actions taken in their own lives.

“I’d like to congratulate all of the pupils and staff at James Knott C of E Primary School on their FairAware Award and wish them every success with the continuation of the project.”

Pupils raise ÂŁ163 for NSPCC’s ‘Number Day’

18th February 2022Leanne Tonks

Last week, pupils at James Knott took part in the NSPCC’s ‘Number Day’ – a maths-inspired fundraising event to support the charity’s ‘Speak Out, Stay Safe’ initiative.

Pupils were encouraged to come into school wearing an item of clothing with a number on it and during the day, each class solved maths puzzles and took part in problem solving, reasoning and number games.

Pupil Voice, our school council, tells us that Numeracy is a favourite subject at James Knott. The children love to be challenged and like that there is always a right answer, so Number Day was a huge success and we helped to raise ÂŁ163 for the NSPCC.

A huge thank you to everyone who took part and donated and to our super creative families for making such fantastic number-themed t-shirts and clothing!

Important Notice: Cyber Security Issue

2nd February 2022Leanne Tonks

Dear parents/carers,

It has been brought to our attention by a parent from one of our Trust schools that a suspicious looking email, seemingly sent by members of staff within the Trust, has been issued. The emails have a ‘zip file’ attachment and password to use to open it, however, this is not a legitimate email so please do not click on the attachment.

While a thorough investigation is still being carried out by our IT team, we can confirm that this is part of a wider cyber security issue which highly likely originated from outside of NCEAT, but is now having a direct impact on our own communications systems.

We have increased our internal online security as far as possible and are working with providers to ensure that as many of these potentially harmful emails are ‘filtered out’ of our network, however, if you do receive any suspicious looking emails, claiming to be from James Knott Primary, please do not click on any links or attachments and mark the email as ‘spam’.

To help you to identify a potential scam, please see some guidance below:

  • The “sent by” address will either be a jumble of random letters and numbers or have an unusual domain (not .com or .co.uk)
  • The email will contain links to click to ‘confirm your details’ or ‘make a payment’
  • The email may have an attachment which looks strange or unsafe to open
  • The email may give you a limited time to reply
  • There might be spelling mistakes, bad grammar and sentences which don’t quite make sense
  • If the email contains any logos or images, these may appear ‘pixelated’ or blurry
  • If requesting money, the amount will usually be quite specific, not rounded up to the nearest pound/pence to try and make it seem legitimate, eg ÂŁ692.88 instead of ÂŁ700,00.

We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause. We are working as quickly as we can to resolve the issue. If anyone has any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to get in touch.

Trust Primary School’s in national Top 50 for reading achievements

30th September 2021Leanne Tonks

NCEAT’s primary schools have been recognised in the UK’s top 50 schools for Accelerated Reader usage.

Accelerated Reader is an online platform which supports pupils’ reading skills. When they first start using the platform, pupils complete a STAR reading test which gives them a level based on their reading ability and advises on the books they should be reading. This allows teachers to ensure that pupils are challenged with an appropriate text and develops their reading fluency.

Once they have finished reading their book, they can then complete a comprehension quiz to assess whether they have understood what they have read. This gives teachers valuable information about pupils reading ages and also reading comprehension ability.

Prior to the summer holidays, the primary schools within the Trust had a big push on reading for pleasure, encouraging pupils to read at home with parents and carers. This push has seen pupils carry out over 28,537 Accelerated Reader quizzes online since August – that’s 28,537 books read across Bishop’s, Grace Darling, James Knott, Thomas Bewick and William Leech C of E Primary Schools!

Jack Christophers, Director of Literacy, commented:

“We’re absolutely blown away by what our pupils have achieved through Accelerated Reader. The statistics speak for themselves – our pupils have put in an amazing amount of effort and we’re extremely proud of each and every one of them.”
